no they do not. I keep mine the same way though it is slightly more of a screen but they do not stress out. The only reason solid colored dividers are used is so the fish are ready to show off as soon as they see their neighbor, if they see them all the time they get used to it and it becomes less stimulating so they don't often put on a show....
