No no no. The true minimum tank size for a betta is 5 gallons! 2.5 gallons is not big enough for a betta to get enough exercise!

We have a betta who is actually doing better in a smaller tank. We tried keeping him in a 1 gallon bowl, which compared to him was huge (he's a small one), but he became skittish and began to loose his tail fin. But when we put him in a smaller tank, he grew more brave, and has since begun to grow his tail back.
